Offering weed spraying as a service.

If you are mowing lawns, it is only a matter of time before a customer asks you to do some weed spraying.

If it is a simple spray of weeds on a path or driveway, it is a pretty simple job. We normally have a look and quote at a couple of bucks a minute.

Spraying roundup is not hard to do.  However, when customers start asking for other things, such as weed spraying a lawn, things can become tricky.

If you are not careful, you can get a hefty bill if things go wrong.

A while ago, I mowed a lawn at a kindergarten. They used to have an elderly guy who did the lawns and gardens.

They had him for a few years, and everything was fine until the was an accident. He made a mistake with the weed spray on the lawn and killed most of the lawns.

Luckily for him, he did have insurance that would cover the damage.

Unluckily for him, when he contacted the insurance company. It turned out that he wasn’t insured.

They told him that to be covered, he would need to hold a current chemicals licence. He didn’t have one.

Just knowing how to do a job is not always enough.

Here in NZ, you need a chemicals licence before spraying lawn treatments, etc. You can get training for a chemicals licence through Growsafe.

Now, before you say, “This would never happen to me”.

It has happened again recently.

A company with the unfortunate name “Kut and Kill Lawn Care” made a similar mistake and killed many lawns. It turned out that they weren’t covered, either.

Anyway, a timely reminder to make sure your insurance is correct.

Don’t do any work that requires certification if you do not hold the correct documents.

It may come back to bite you.
