Lawn mowing leads:

Are you leaving money on the table when you get incoming leads You obviously mow lawns, but what else do you do?

How about gardens, trees, hedges, rubbish removal or lawn treatments?

These are all jobs that people expect lawn-mowing businesses to do.

We get a couple of calls every month for lawn treatments, which is definitely not a service we offer.

Now the chances are that you only do some of these things. In fact, if you are offering all these things, you may need to focus more on your core offerings, but that’s another story.

Anyway. It doesn’t matter if you do these other jobs or not. You are going to get calls about it. Why you shouldn’t say “No.”

People will assume that since you mow lawns, you may offer everything from gardening to repairing garden gates.

If you tell the customer that you cannot help, they will think twice about ringing you what they have jobs that you can do.

We only accept lawn mowing jobs (small ones at that), but we like to make sure that everyone who rings us gets put in touch with someone who can help (within reason, Of course)

Lawn Mowing Leads: A Big Mistake! Are You Leaving Money on the Table?

You want the customer’s experience on the phone to be good.

If you can’t help them, you should immediately put them onto someone who can.

If you can tell (or text)  them another contractor’s details, the customer experience with your business will be much better, and they will be more likely to ring you again next time.

Getting your list of local contractors.

We try to have all these extra services (within reason) covered in our list of local businesses. We have built our list up over the years, but there are a few shortcuts to building yours.

Approach other businesses while you are out working. This can be in places like

  • The local mower repair shop
  • The local green dump
  • When you work on a lawn and another contractor turns up to do a job.

I was on a lawn a couple of weeks ago when a tree guy turned up. This guy was different. He had the smallest portable stump grinder I have ever seen. I got his card and put it on my list. That will come in handy the next time I talk to someone with a hard-to-access tree stump.

Another way to work on that list is to search actively. This is better for new businesses or existing businesses with few connections.

First, search for a local business that provides your desired service on Google. Look at the “Google My Business” (google Maps) listings. Find the one with the best reviews and read a few. Now call them and have a chat.

Talking to local contractors.

When making a deal with local businesses, there are a couple of ways to approach it.

First, determine that they are not offering your service or recommending a lawn mowing business. If they mow lawns as well, then the conversion is over. You do not want this kind of arrangement.

If they don’t offer your service but currently recommending another lawn mowing business, are they fixed on continuing with them, or would they be open to working with your business?

If they are happy to work with you, the most common agreement is that you send them quotes, and they send you the lawn mowing leads. You need to keep an eye on this and ensure it isn’t one-sided. You are sending them lots of quotes, and them sending you none. The agreement needs to be fair.

Tracking the leads.

So how do you know what quotes you are forwarding to each other? The simplest way is to tell the customer that the guy is busy, but if they mention your business, he will fit them in quicker. He says the same thing about you. This usually works quite well.

A more time-consuming but impressive method is for you to take the details and text them to him. That way, they know that the lead came from you.

Get Your Lawn Care Business Running Smoothly

Easier for you and your customers. Jobber helps you quote, schedule, invoice, and get paid—all in one place.

Make sure the lead gets managed.

Now that you have sent the lead, the job is done, Right?

Wrong!

You now need to make sure the quote actually happens.

One of the significant problems with giving away leads is that, like anything that is free, it can appear to lack value. If the contractor is busy and the lead is free, they may decide to ignore it. This will make your business look bad and defeat the purpose of passing the quote through in the first palace.

Make an agreement

To avoid no-shows, agree that the contractor will promptly call back any leads. You call back his leads immediately and vice versa.

Also, when you start dealing with a contractor, tell the customer that you have recently started working with them. Tell them to let you know if they don’t hear back from the contactor.

If the contractor fails once, remind him. If he fails twice, do not send them any more work.

How to guarantee quick responses.

I have found that selling the leads is the best way to get quick responses and reliable contractors. However, I understand that this may only work for some.

My lead buyers respond within the hour and always turn up because they paid for the lead. If I get a call back from an unhappy customer because someone didn’t show, then I put the contractor on notice.

It’s not all about the money. Remember, the original issue was ensuring the customer was happy.

If you sell leads, you will have to go the extra mile.

  • Take full details – name, number, address, and Quick job description.
  • Let the customer know the name of the company that will contact them within the hour (work hours only)
  • Send the quote immediately. Don’t send old quotes.
  • Qualify the call and try to keep the quality high.

We make roughly 20% of our yearly turnover by selling excess leads.

This can be highly profitable if you do it right, and it is a win-win for everyone.

Summing up about lawn mowing leads.

Just remember that when you are starting, always be making connections. Find businesses that will do that other work and send you more lawn-mowing leads.

Then as you grow and your business becomes more established, you can move on to selling excess leads. You can even do what we do and sell lawn-mowing leads that we can manage. That way, you can focus on the work and the areas you want
